My first visit to Mexico occurred when I was in 7th grade as part of a Girl Scout trip. In U.S. Catholic churches, confessionals consist of three closets. The priest sits in the middle one and alternates hearing confessions from people in the two side closets. Everything is very private. I was shocked to find that in Mexico, everything's out in the open and everyone can hear your sins as you list them off. Presumably, at age 14, I didn't have anything terribly titillating to confess.
