I love going shopping in foreign grocery stores. It’s like a window into the soul of the country. I’m in Germany now, where they have shelf-stable milk in cartons, curry ketchup so you can emulate Berlin’s famed currywurst, and a few unique drink options.
Did they ever have Barbie and Hot Wheels drinks in the United States?
UHT, or Ultra High Temperature milk, is appreciated by some and reviled by others. It’s sold at room temperature in the grocery store, has a long shelf life, and also lasts a long time even after it’s been opened. I’ve found that it’s fine for your breakfast cereal and for baking, although it tastes a bit odd if you just try to pour yourself a glass of UHT milk.
This just makes me want to sing that song from the Sound of Music: “Edelweiss, edelweiss, every morning you greet me …. ”
