Yesterday, I saw two women at the Sarajevo airport wearing niqabs (the ones where everything is covered except for a rectangular opening for the eyes). I began to wonder: what will they do at passport control? Anyone could be under all that cloth!
So I surrepititiously watched them as they approached passport control. They waited until a female officer was available, then pulled the portion covering their hair up (I assume they must have simultaneously pulled the portion over their mouths down so their full face could be compared to their passport photos, but I was behind them at this point and couldn’t see all their gestures). I imagine that a male employee in a nearby booth could also have seen them, but that was the balance between religious customs and the government’s need for security.
