Today is the day of the big solar eclipse. The path of totality ran across Spain, Iceland, and Greenland. Here in Antwerp, the sun was 90% obscured. Shelly and I bought solar glasses for ourselves and solar film to cover our phones and her cameras.
My phone took crummy pictures, just orange blobs, but I was able to see a clearly defined crescent sun through my solar glasses. The crescent moved from, say, northwest to northeast during the minutes closest to maximum obscurity. Since nobody has figured out yet how to take photos using just our eyeballs, I had to borrow a picture from the internet to give you an idea of what I saw. Actually, the size of the crescent was even smaller than this.
We’re gonna try to be in the path of totality for the solar eclipse in 2027!
Important note: you MUST have solar filters over your telephones and cameras as well as your eyes. The intense light from the sun will FRY your devices. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to turn my $1,000 iPhone into a brick. Nor, it should go without saying, do we want to go blind — so definitely make sure you’re wearing quality solar glasses when looking at the eclipse.
