The Mosaics of Philly’s South Street

Philadelphia has over 200 of these mosaic-fronted buildings, all done by local artist Isaiah Zagar. He uses found objects such as broken tile, glass pieces, and mirror slivers. He and his wife own Eye’s Gallery, which has a wide variety of artistic, mostly Latin American, sculptures, home decor, and jewelry. Zagar has been making mosaics and has owned his gallery for over 50 years.

Eye’s Gallery is located at 327 South Street in Philadelphia and is open 11:00am to 7:00pm Monday through Saturday and from 12:00 noon until 7:00pm on Sundays. It is a three-level shop which sells Indian and Latin American folk art, jewelry, and handmade gifts. The mosaic buildings are all over Philly’s South Street and can be seen at any time.
