If you want to drive from Redding in inland California to the Pacific coast, the only way to get there is to go over twisty and mountainous Highway 299 (which, on one trip, prompted me to ponder when the last time I had a brake job done on the old car I was driving that day). Weaverville, located about 22 miles west of Redding, looks like a slice of old-time Americana. Instead of rushing through the drive, stop in Weaverville a while and poke around a bit.
Weaverville Hotel & Emporium. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but was very nice within. The hotel celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2011.
